Smoking Bans Reduce Exposure to Secondhand Smoke
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
As you may know, the Cochrane Reviews answer health questions by doing a thorough literature review and then publishing their findings. They have just released a report on secondhand smoke. They sought to determine if smoking bans reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, reduce consumption, lower prevalence, or improve the health those who benefit from a ban.
Implications for public health practice
Support for smoking bans has increased with time and compliance with the legislation is high. Workers, particularly in the hospitality sector have benefited from reduced exposure to passive smoke and attributable health benefits associated with cardiac care particularly are suggestive of a benefit. The balance of evidence suggests that legislative smoking bans have achieved their primary objective of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke.
