Omega 3 Fish Oil
There have been thousands of publications in recent years touting the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids especially EPA and DHA. Some of these benefits are described below.
Ocean Blue Professional Ultra-Purified Omega-3 is not a “fish-oil” - it is 90% purified Omega-3 that has been molecularly distilled 25 times to remove toxins, contaminants, saturated fat, and any unpleasant fishy taste. Because it is produced to pharmaceutical standards in an FDA approved cGMP facility, healthcare professionals can recommend it with confidence to their patients. Research across a broad range of disciplines continues to uncover a growing body evidence for the potential benefits of Omega-3 supplementation.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are two essential fatty acids required by our body in order to function as normal. Our body cannot produce these naturally therefore we must obtain them through our diet. There is also another Omega-3 called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA may be found in some plants such as Flax and in particular in its seed’s oil. However, when we ingest ALA our body converts it to EPA and DHA very inefficiently; only about 10% of the ALA we eat converts to EPA or DHA.
Most American diets provide us with another Omega fatty acid called Arachidonic acid (AA): an Omega-6. Americans generally consume 10 times more Omega-6 then Omega-3s. Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in meat and meat products. While Omega-3s are generally found in plant materials as noted above, it is also present in large quantities in fish or supplements made from fish.
According to both primary and secondary prevention studies conducted at major medical institutions and reviewed by the federal government, consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, like EPA and DHA, reduces all-cause mortality and various cardiovascular disease outcomes such as sudden death, cardiac death and myocardial infarction. The evidence according to the government is strongest for fish oil supplements as well as the consumption of certain fish. There are also studies performed in animals that demonstrate that omega-3 fatty acids affect cellular functions that ensure normal heart rate and coronary blood flow. Most striking is the impact of Omega-3 on blood triglycerides. EPA and DHA have been shown to lower blood triglyceride levels in a dose-dependent manner. They have also been shown to lower blood pressure by a few points, and have a beneficial effect on coronary artery restenosis after angioplasty. The government’s review of the scientific data also concluded that Omega-3 has an impact on exercise capacity in patients with coronary atherosclerosis.
While numerous publications report that Omega-3 will affect other disease states such as inflammatory bowel disease, renal disease, lupus, bone density and diabetes, these studies seem inadequate and conclusions cannot be certain at this point in time. However, data strongly suggests that EPA and DHA can reduce joint tenderness and the need for corticosteroid drugs in rheumatoid arthritis. In conclusion, while the health effects of omega-3 fatty acids require further investigation in areas like inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes (and many others), supplementation is generally regarded as safe and their health benefit has been reported in thousands of reputable medical publications.
